NOAA Celebrates 150 Years of Tidal Observations

A tide gauge exhibit at the Arognaut Hotel in San Francisco |
NOAA's National Ocean Service Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services celebrated the 150th Anniversary of its longest continuous tide record on June 30, 2004. Currently located at the Gulf of the Farallones National Marine Sanctuary visitor center in San Francisco, the tide gauge has been in operation since June 30, 1854.
A permanent NOAA exhibit in the San Francisco Maritime National Historic Park's museum at the Argonaut Hotel educates visitors about the nature of tides and NOAA's role in observing and predicting this phenomenon for the mariners of the world and local maritime communities. An essay celebrating "150 Years of Tides on the Western Coast" can be viewed here. (pdf)
