NOAA's Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary and Underwater Preserve broke ground October 26, 2004 on the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center, a 20,000-square-foot facility in Alpena, Michigan, that will preserve and highlight the maritime heritage of the Great Lakes and the shipwrecks of Michigan's Thunder Bay. When completed, the facility will feature a maritime heritage "discovery center" featuring more than 8,000 square feet of exhibits on the Great Lakes, shipwrecks, archaeology, and maritime history. The center will also have an auditorium for showing films and live video feeds from Thunder Bay shipwrecks, an archaeological conservation laboratory, and an education resource room. The center will be housed in a former paper mill located in Alpena's historic downtown area and will be the cornerstone of a redevelopment of the city's waterfront.
